OUR STORY

The Recipes That Lived in Her Hands,
Kept Alive in Yours

Our Story

How It All Began

My name is Mark, and Family Heritage Cooking started in a kitchen I remember from my childhood. As a boy, I would watch wide-eyed while my grandmother made biscuits from scratch. She never measured a single thing. Instead, she poured out a mound of flour, pressed a well into the middle, and worked the dough entirely by feel while a cast-iron skillet heated on the stove.

She cut those biscuits with an old, frozen orange-juice can, set them in the hot pan, and slid it into the oven. Minutes later, they emerged perfectly golden brown. When I once asked her why she used an orange-juice can, she simply smiled and said, “It was the right size.”

“The recipe lived entirely in her hands. It was a simple technique, common in her day, and one you rarely see anymore.”

More Than the Recipe

How a little flour and a few unmeasured pinches turned into those biscuits, I could never quite figure out back then. It was only years later that I understood the rest of it: that some days she must have been tired and would rather have rested, but the moment the grandkids appeared, she lit up, loving nothing more than showing off what she could do in that kitchen. She never wrote any of it down; the recipe lived entirely in her hands.

Why We Exist

Family Heritage Cooking was born from a simple realization: the most meaningful cooking knowledge in the world rarely gets written down. It lives in the hands of grandmothers and home cooks who learned it for love — the masa ratios, the curry pastes, the cast-iron techniques passed down, not written down — and it quietly disappears when that generation is gone. We exist to make sure it isn’t lost.

Our Mission

To Preserve, Honor, and Celebrate

To preserve, honor, and celebrate authentic heritage cooking: the family and cultural recipes, techniques, and stories that usually disappear with each generation so that this knowledge is kept alive and passed on.

Our Vision

A World Where Nothing Is Lost

A world where the family and cultural cooking knowledge that usually vanishes with a generation is instead preserved, shared, and celebrated — and where the home cooks who carry it are recognized as the cultural custodians they are.

Our Core Values

The Pillars of Our Mission

Mexican
